Storm Ingrid damages sea defences at South Shields

Part of the sea wall near South Shields lighthouse has collapsed following days of heavy seas and strong winds brought by Storm Ingrid. Powerful waves battered the North East coastline over the weekend, leaving sections of the historic structure destroyed and debris scattered along the promenade.

Access to parts of the pier and surrounding areas has been restricted while safety inspections are carried out. Residents reported dramatic conditions as repeated waves surged over coastal defences during periods of intense wind and rain, with visible damage emerging on Sunday, 25 January.

Storm Ingrid, named by Portugal’s national weather service IPMA, has caused widespread disruption across the UK. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for heavy rain in parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland and other regions, cautioning that further flooding and travel disruption remain possible as unsettled conditions continue.

Elsewhere, the storm has also affected coastal communities, with part of Teignmouth’s Victorian pier collapsing after being struck by large waves. The Environment Agency has issued multiple flood alerts across England, urging people in coastal and low-lying areas to stay vigilant as further spells of wet and windy weather are forecast.
