After appearing in the musical comedy Pitch Perfect 2 in 2015, Steinfeld released her debut EP Haiz, which reached number 57 on the US Billboard 200. She followed this with her second EP, Half Written Story, in 2020, producing singles such as Love Myself, At My Best and Starving. Her most recent solo track, SunKissing, was released in 2023, alongside a later soundtrack contribution for her 2025 film Sinners.

She explained that returning to the studio would be an easy decision if the timing felt right, noting that music has long played an important role in her life.
