Date:

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an 18-day-old baby girl died following a fall from a height at a residential address in central London.

Police were called to Horseferry Road in Westminster at about 7.30am on Saturday. The infant was taken to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, according to the Metropolitan Police.

A 43-year-old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell, who is leading the investigation, said officers believe the incident took place in a domestic setting. She said police were carrying out urgent enquiries to establish the full circumstances.

On Saturday evening, forensic officers were seen working at a window of a flat on the Peabody Estate, while a police cordon remained in place across much of Great Peter Street, close to Horseferry Road.

Horseferry Road, which runs between Lambeth Bridge and Greycoat Place, is a major route through Westminster and is home to a mix of residential properties and prominent buildings, including government offices and Channel 4’s headquarters.
