Kemi Badenoch reflects on music choices on Desert Island Discs

Kemi Badenoch has revealed that her wedding first dance was set to Love Is All Around after selecting the song for BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. The Conservative leader explained that she and her husband, Hamish, whom she met while campaigning, chose the Wet Wet Wet version of the track because of its romantic message and enduring lyrics.

The song, originally written and released by The Troggs in 1967 and later popularised in the 1990s, was described as symbolising lasting love. Mrs Badenoch said its message of commitment and continuity resonated strongly with both her and her husband, making it a meaningful choice for their wedding day.

She also selected two songs from the musical Hamilton, including The Story Of Tonight, which she linked to her first Conservative leadership bid in 2022. The track was said to remind her of a moment shared with close friends who encouraged her to stand, reflecting a period of political risk-taking and personal significance despite her junior status at the time.

Her second choice from the musical, Dear Theodosia, was described as deeply emotional. Mrs Badenoch noted that the song captures parental hope alongside tragedy, adding that it reflects the motivations of many people who enter politics. She said its themes underline both the fears and aspirations associated with parenthood, particularly the desire to create a better future for one’s children.
