UK cities prepare for prolonged snow and severe winter weather

Date:

Birmingham and several other major UK cities are preparing for a prolonged period of severe winter weather, with forecasts indicating a snowstorm that could last up to six days. Weather models suggest some regions may experience significant snowfall, with accumulations potentially reaching up to 40 inches in parts of the country. Initial snowfall is expected to move in from 6 February, with heavier conditions forecast from the following day.

According to forecasting data, snow is likely to affect Wales, the Midlands, northern England and parts of Scotland first, before spreading more widely. Cities including Birmingham, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow are expected to see early snowfall, while London, East Anglia and the north-west may also be impacted shortly afterwards. Continued snowfall in Scotland could lead to substantial build-ups, particularly in the Highlands.

Further south, conditions may deteriorate as the weather system progresses. By 9 February, snow could settle as far south as Exeter, with additional flurries increasing accumulations across central England and Wales. Forecast maps suggest that by 11 February, much of the UK may see some level of snow cover, with only limited areas potentially remaining unaffected.

The Met Office and BBC Weather have both warned of ongoing wintry hazards, including snow, flooding and travel disruption. Storm Chandra has already brought heavy rain, strong winds and localised flooding, prompting multiple weather and flood warnings. Transport services have been disrupted, with flight cancellations at several major airports and rail closures in flood-affected areas, as authorities continue to monitor conditions closely.
