Raheem Sterling leaves Chelsea by mutual consent

Date:

Raheem Sterling has departed Chelsea following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract, bringing an end to his time at Stamford Bridge after three and a half seasons. The former England international joined the club from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 and was the first high-profile signing under Chelsea’s new ownership.

Sterling had fallen out of favour over the past two seasons and spent last campaign on loan at Arsenal, where he made 28 appearances. However, a permanent move away from Chelsea did not materialise last summer, and he has not featured in first-team action during the current season.

Chelsea confirmed the decision in a statement, thanking Sterling for his contribution and wishing him well in the next stage of his career. The winger’s high weekly wage was widely seen as a barrier to potential transfers, with his contract originally due to run until 2027.

Despite a promising start to his Chelsea career, Sterling’s form became inconsistent, with injuries also affecting his progress. Now a free agent, the 31-year-old will be seeking a new club as he looks to revive his career and add to the 13 major honours he has won to date.
