Actor Julian Sands was reported missing on 13 January 2023 after failing to return from a solo hike on Mount Baldy in southern California. A keen walker and climber, the British actor had set out alone to explore an area he knew well and particularly enjoyed when staying in Los Angeles. His disappearance prompted an extensive search operation amid increasingly difficult weather conditions.

After more than five months of searches, Sands’ remains were discovered on 24 June 2023 by a group of hikers in a flat area known as Goode Canyon. His death was formally confirmed three days later. Authorities later stated that the exact date of death could not be determined, with the coroner ruling the cause as “undetermined” due to the condition of the remains, a decision described as common in such cases.
At the time of his disappearance, local authorities had warned that Mount Baldy posed serious risks because of high winds, snow and ice, creating hazardous hiking and avalanche conditions. Multiple rescue missions were carried out in the surrounding area, but efforts to locate Sands were repeatedly hampered by the weather. Investigators said it remained unclear whether he fell, was caught in an avalanche, became injured or lost his way.
