J K Rowling has been ranked among the United Kingdom’s top taxpayers, with new figures showing she pays an estimated £47.5 million in tax each year, equivalent to roughly £130,000 a day. The Scottish author, best known for creating the Harry Potter series, appears 36th on the latest Sunday Times Tax List, which highlights the 100 individuals and families contributing the most to the public finances.

The list places Rowling alongside high-profile figures from sport and entertainment, including Ed Sheeran, Anthony Joshua, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah. According to the compilers, the overall tax contributions identified this year have risen significantly, largely due to higher corporation tax rates, with every entry contributing at least £11 million over the past year.
Rowling’s appearance on the list comes amid renewed attention on her public dispute with actress Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film franchise. The author recently criticised Watson following comments the actress made on a podcast, continuing a long-running disagreement linked to differing views on transgender issues. Watson, along with co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, has previously voiced support for transgender rights.

The debate has kept Rowling in the public eye, alongside ongoing discussion of her cultural and financial influence. While she has denied accusations of transphobia, her comments have continued to attract criticism and support in equal measure. The latest tax figures underline the scale of her financial success and her substantial contribution to the UK Exchequer, even as controversy surrounding her public statements persists.
