Gmail users gain long-awaited option to change email address

Date:

Gmail users are finally being given the chance to leave behind outdated or regrettable email addresses, as Google introduces a long-requested feature allowing changes to account usernames.

From April, the update enables users in the United States to modify the part of their email address that appears before the “@” symbol — a shift that marks a significant departure from Gmail’s long-standing policy of permanent usernames. The feature, first announced late last year, is being rolled out تدريجياً to accounts.

For many, the change offers an opportunity to replace addresses created years ago — often informal or poorly chosen — with something more suitable for professional or personal use.
To update their address, users must navigate to their Google Account settings, select “Personal info”, then “Email”, and finally access the “Google Account email” section. Where available, an option to change the email address will appear.

However, the update comes with certain limitations. Users will only be permitted to alter their username once every 12 months, preventing frequent changes.

Importantly, Google has confirmed that existing emails, contacts and account data will remain intact following the update. In addition, the previous email address will continue to function as an alternative alias, allowing messages to be received and accounts to be accessed using either address. The move reflects growing recognition of the long-term role email addresses play in both personal identity and professional communication, particularly as many users have retained the same accounts for decades.
