Dame Emma Thompson has explained that she has largely stepped away from theatre work in recent years, citing the demanding hours associated with stage performances. The actress has said she is naturally a morning person, which makes the late-night routines of theatre particularly challenging.

Reflecting on her early career, Thompson recalled the physical and mental strain of performing in the West End musical Me and My Girl during the 1980s. She described the experience as exhausting, noting that lengthy runs with multiple performances each week left little room for rest or recovery, especially at a time when workplace protections were more limited.
Her most recent major stage appearances were in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in New York and London during 2014 and 2015. More recently, she has taken part in Whodunnit Unrehearsed 2 at London’s Park Theatre, an improvisational production that features a rotating cast of guest performers.

While she has not ruled out returning to the stage, Thompson has indicated that any future theatre work would likely be for a short run. She has also highlighted the importance of community-focused venues such as the Park Theatre, praising their role in providing creative opportunities and supportive spaces, particularly for young people and vulnerable groups.
