Chiesa set for Serie A return after frustrating Liverpool spell

Date:

The brief Premier League chapter of Federico Chiesa’s career appears to be drawing to an early close. Less than 18 months after arriving at Liverpool with a reputation as one of Europe’s most explosive wingers, the 28-year-old is reportedly in talks to return to Serie A. While Liverpool continue their campaign under Arne Slot, the Italian’s imminent departure has sparked debate about his limited opportunities. Maurizio Romei, president and coach of Settignanese, where Chiesa began his footballing journey, questioned Slot’s reluctance to utilise a player he believes was well-suited to English football, noting Chiesa has started only four of his 21 appearances this season.

Speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb, Romei expressed his surprise at Chiesa’s treatment at Anfield. Celebrating a milestone of 6,000 matches on the touchline across a 50-year career, the veteran coach has observed Chiesa’s development from a promising youngster to a European champion. For Romei, the lack of playing time at Liverpool is baffling, especially given the winger’s professionalism and tactical qualities.

Romei was candid about Slot’s handling of Chiesa, describing it as a “mystery”. While acknowledging the competition for places, particularly from Mohamed Salah, he argued that the fast-paced, open style of English football should have suited Chiesa’s direct running and pace. “I hoped he would have much more space, also because English football suits him well,” Romei explained. “He performed very, very well. There were no behavioural issues, and the fans adore him – it’s a mystery why he wasn’t used more.”

A return to Juventus now seems imminent. Reports from Italy describe the transfer talks as “hot hours,” with Liverpool and the Bianconeri working to finalise a deal. Romei believes Juventus is a logical destination given Chiesa’s familiarity with the club and culture, though Napoli could also be suitable. Despite his frustrations at Liverpool, Chiesa has maintained professionalism, never publicly criticising the manager. Romei suggests this attitude will serve him well in Turin, while also keeping him in contention for Italy’s World Cup qualifiers under Gennaro Gattuso.
