A newly published royal biography has alleged that Meghan Markle was not expected to accompany Prince Harry to Balmoral on the day Queen Elizabeth II died — a claim strongly disputed by the Sussexes. In Betrayal: Power, Deceit And The Fight For The Future Of The Royal Family, author Tom Bower recounts the events of 8 September 2022, when senior members of the Royal Family travelled to Scotland following news that the Queen’s health had deteriorated.

According to the book, King Charles III was informed early that morning of his mother’s condition and promptly flew to Balmoral Castle, where she had been staying in her final weeks. He is said to have contacted both his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, advising them to make their way to RAF Northolt for a flight north.
However, the account claims that discussions took place at Frogmore Cottage regarding whether Meghan should accompany Harry. Bower alleges that her presence was not welcomed, citing previous reports that she had declined invitations to visit Balmoral during the Queen’s lifetime.
The author further suggests that Charles viewed the situation as sensitive, reportedly believing it inappropriate to share such a private moment with someone he felt had been critical of the monarchy. The book also claims Harry reacted with frustration to the decision.

In an attempt to present the matter as consistent, Charles is said to have pointed out that Catherine, Princess of Wales would also not be travelling to Balmoral. Meanwhile, William is reported to have proceeded without delay, instructing the aircraft to depart.
The claims have been firmly rejected by representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. In a statement, a spokesperson criticised Bower’s work, accusing him of promoting unfounded narratives and suggesting his commentary had moved beyond reasonable critique.
Queen Elizabeth II died later that day at the age of 96, with “old age” recorded as the cause. Her funeral took place on 19 September 2022 and was attended by members of the Royal Family, including Harry and Meghan.
The book explores broader tensions within the monarchy, particularly the strained relationship between the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Household. It also revisits longstanding reports of disagreements within the family, though many of its claims remain contested.
