Half a century after the release of Rocky, it remains difficult to discuss Sylvester Stallone without mentioning the character that defined much of his career: Rocky Balboa. Across eight films and more than four decades, the Oscar-winning franchise followed the determined boxer through a series of memorable rivalries and challenges. During the series, Balboa faced formidable opponents played by Carl Weathers, Mr. T and Dolph Lundgren. Later instalments also shifted the narrative, placing Michael B. Jordan under Balboa’s guidance in the early chapters of the Creed trilogy.

Stallone’s portrayal of the resilient Italian-American boxer became one of cinema’s most recognisable performances. His muscular, athletic image placed him firmly among the action stars who dominated Hollywood in the late twentieth century. Alongside contemporaries such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stallone represented a generation of actors whose physical training formed a central part of their on-screen appeal.

That emphasis on physicality extended well beyond the Rocky films. Stallone continued to take on demanding roles in productions including Rambo, The Expendables and Guardians of the Galaxy. At 79, the actor still maintains a disciplined fitness routine, though he has adapted his training following numerous injuries sustained over the years.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Stallone explained that decades of physically intense work have left their mark. He revealed that he has undergone multiple operations, including five procedures on his back, surgery on both shoulders, three neck fusions and operations on both knees. Because of these injuries, his approach to exercise has evolved. Rather than lifting heavy free weights, he now focuses largely on resistance bands and cable machines. The approach, he says, resembles physiotherapy and allows him to keep his joints moving while reducing strain on his body.

Mobility exercises form the cornerstone of his daily routine. Before beginning work on scripts or other projects, Stallone begins with stretching and movement to loosen his muscles after sleep. He has said that staying active early in the day helps prevent the stiffness that often accompanies long periods of inactivity.

Earlier this year, the actor offered fans a glimpse inside his personal training space through a post on Instagram. In the message, he described his gym as a place of discipline and reflection where he works to maintain both physical strength and mental focus.

Stallone has also spoken openly about how his views on diet have changed over time. While preparing for Rocky III, he followed an extremely restrictive regimen designed to achieve exceptionally low body fat levels. During that period, he reportedly consumed large amounts of coffee and very limited food, a strategy he later acknowledged caused fatigue and memory problems.

His current philosophy is far more balanced. In his fitness book Sly Moves, Stallone compares the human body to an engine that must be fuelled appropriately to perform well. He generally maintains a diet composed of roughly 60% protein, 20% carbohydrates and 20% fats, adjusting the proportions depending on whether he is preparing for a film role or simply maintaining his health. The actor now emphasises moderation rather than extreme restriction, noting that he has experimented with many complex diets only to conclude that simpler nutritional habits tend to be the most effective.

Stallone’s dedication to training has been evident throughout his career. While preparing for Rambo: First Blood Part II, he reportedly gained around 4.5 kilograms of lean muscle within eight weeks. To achieve the transformation, he trained intensively with two-time Mr. Olympia champion Franco Columbu, performing long sessions that combined strength exercises in quick succession to maximise muscle development. Even decades later, Stallone’s commitment to physical conditioning reflects the enduring message of the Rocky series: persistence, discipline and resilience can carry a person further than they might expect.
