Middle East conflict may strengthen Russia’s position, analysts say

Date:

Russia could emerge as a geopolitical beneficiary of the conflict involving Iran, according to analysts assessing the broader consequences of the crisis. When Vladimir Putin spoke with Donald Trump earlier this week, the Russian president reportedly called for a swift political and diplomatic settlement. However, the ongoing tensions in the Middle East may already be shifting global dynamics in ways that favour Moscow.

Rising oil prices appear to be one of the most immediate advantages for Russia. In recent months, sanctions and lower energy prices had placed increasing pressure on the country’s finances, with oil and gas revenues declining sharply. The disruption to energy markets following military strikes in Iran and instability around the Strait of Hormuz has pushed oil prices significantly higher, potentially boosting Moscow’s income from exports.

The shift in global focus could also have implications for the war in Ukraine. With international attention and military resources increasingly directed towards the Middle East, diplomatic efforts related to the conflict in Ukraine may slow. Ukrainian officials have already indicated that some talks have been postponed, while concerns remain about the availability of advanced air defence systems such as the US-made Patriot missiles.

Despite these developments, analysts caution that any advantage for Russia may depend on how long the crisis continues. While higher energy prices could ease financial pressures in the short term, structural challenges linked to sanctions and economic constraints remain. Observers also note that Moscow’s relationship with Tehran has often been pragmatic rather than deeply strategic, suggesting Russia may prioritise its own geopolitical interests as the situation evolves.
