Marsh Farm: the understated Sandringham property linked to Prince Andrew

Date:

Royal residences are often associated with centuries of history, but Marsh Farm on the Sandringham estate is notable largely for its lack of a distinguished past. The modest former farmhouse, reportedly set to become a new home for Prince Andrew, has stood empty for several years and was previously occupied by a local farmer. Its simple character contrasts sharply with other properties on the estate, including Royal Lodge, Wood Farm and The Folly.

Marsh Farm has received only limited historical attention, with a brief reference appearing in the early 20th-century book The King’s Homeland. The passage describes the surrounding marshland and sea defences near the Wash, highlighting the area’s flat, muddy terrain rather than any architectural or royal significance. The property’s location on marshland has long been associated with the presence of oozing mud, a feature that has drawn more curiosity than admiration.

More recently, concerns have been raised about the site’s long-term suitability. According to an Environment Agency document, the property is considered to be at risk of flooding, as it lies close to Dersingham Bog within the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. While drainage systems typically divert rainwater to the Wolferton Pumping Station, local residents have been advised to sign up for flood warnings should protective measures fail.

Additional practical issues have also been reported, including potholes along the access road and signs of rodent activity around the grounds. These challenges stand in contrast to Prince Andrew’s former residence, Royal Lodge in Windsor, a Grade II-listed property with extensive grounds and deep royal associations. Royal Lodge, which has historic links to King George IV and Queen Elizabeth II, was leased to Andrew in 2003 and vacated earlier this month, marking a significant change in circumstances compared with the far more modest Marsh Farm.
