Justice Department faces criticism over handling of Epstein file release

Date:

The United States Department of Justice has come under renewed scrutiny after newly released materials linked to Jeffrey Epstein reportedly included unredacted explicit images and identifying information. An analysis by CNN found that the disclosure contained material that should have been withheld under federal law, prompting concerns about the department’s redaction process.

Under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed by Congress and signed into law last November, the Justice Department is required to remove sexually explicit material and details that could identify victims. The department said the images have since been redacted and stated that teams are working to address further concerns, including additional removals required under the legislation. However, critics have warned that once released, such material may continue to circulate online beyond official control.

The review also identified instances of inconsistent redaction across duplicate documents published on the department’s website. In some cases, different versions of the same image obscured different details, while others briefly appeared without sufficient redaction before being removed. Personal information from official documents belonging to several individuals was also reportedly included, some of whom have not been charged with any offence.

The latest findings add to a series of issues surrounding the release of the Epstein files, including earlier disclosures that left faces and sensitive details visible. Justice Department officials have acknowledged mistakes but said they were corrected quickly, citing the scale and complexity of reviewing millions of pages within a limited timeframe. Senior figures have maintained that the redaction process prioritised victim protection, while conceding that errors occurred and will continue to be addressed.
