Industry character draws loose parallels with Ghislaine Maxwell case

Date:

Marisa Abela has said that elements of her character’s storyline in the BBC drama Industry were loosely inspired by the real-life case of Ghislaine Maxwell. Abela plays Yasmin Kara-Hanani, the daughter of a powerful publishing tycoon whose death at sea forms a central plot point in the latest series.

The actor confirmed that similarities between Yasmin’s background and Maxwell’s family history were intentional but limited. Maxwell’s father, Robert Maxwell, died in 1991 after falling from his yacht, a detail mirrored in Industry, where Yasmin’s father is found dead in the Mediterranean following an apparent fall from his vessel.

Abela explained that while the inspiration was drawn from widely reported events, she was careful not to create a direct parallel. She described the storyline as reflecting broader themes of proximity to power and instability, rather than closely recreating real individuals or cases that remain sensitive and distressing.

Maxwell was sentenced in 2022 to 20 years in prison for child sex trafficking offences linked to Jeffrey Epstein, who died in custody in 2019. Recent releases of US justice department files have renewed public scrutiny of Epstein’s network, underscoring why the series sought to keep its fictional narrative at a clear distance from real-world crimes.
