Germany rules out World Cup boycott despite internal pressure

Date:

Germany’s football federation has confirmed that it will not boycott the upcoming World Cup, despite internal calls to protest the actions of former US President Donald Trump. The German Football Association (DFB) emphasised the unifying role of sport, stating that its aim is to strengthen this positive influence rather than prevent participation. The statement was issued late on Friday.

The DFB executive committee had met to consider the possibility of withdrawal from the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This option was initially proposed by DFB vice-president Oke Göttlich, who also serves as president of Bundesliga club St. Pauli, citing recent political actions by Mr Trump as cause for serious consideration.

In response, the federation stressed that discussions on sporting policy should remain internal and confirmed that a boycott is “not currently under consideration.” It added that the DFB is in contact with representatives from politics, security, business, and sport to prepare for the tournament scheduled from 11 June to 19 July. Previous US policies, including proposed tariffs and international actions, have caused concern in Europe, while former FIFA president Sepp Blatter advised fans to avoid the competition.

Despite these issues, Germany’s national team will compete. The DFB concluded that it aims to participate fairly against the other qualified teams and hopes that supporters worldwide can enjoy a peaceful festival of football both in stadiums and fan zones, similar to the experience of the 2024 European Championship held in Germany.
