Minnesota shooting raises questions over ICE use of force

Date:

A 37-year-old intensive care nurse, Alex Pretti, was shot dead during protests against immigration enforcement in Minneapolis, marking the second fatal incident linked to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minnesota this month. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Pretti confronted officers with a handgun during a targeted search and was killed after resisting arrest. President Donald Trump echoed this account, blaming local authorities and stating that officers acted in self-defence.

Witness testimony and video footage, however, present a conflicting picture. Several witnesses have sworn that Pretti was holding a phone or camera rather than a weapon when he approached the agents. Videos circulating online show masked federal officers wrestling him to the ground during a chaotic confrontation, moments before gunshots are heard. Pretti is later seen lying motionless, and police confirmed his death at the scene.

The incident occurred amid heightened tensions following the killing of another protester, Renee Good, earlier in January, which also sparked widespread demonstrations. Federal agents had been deployed to Minneapolis as part of a large-scale immigration enforcement operation involving around 2,000 personnel. Protesters had used whistles and street blockades to disrupt ICE patrols, and confrontations escalated rapidly on the day of the shooting.

Pretti’s family have strongly rejected the government’s account, describing him as a law-abiding citizen who was trying to help others during the protest. They insist he was unarmed and accuse the administration of spreading falsehoods about his actions. As calls grow for an independent investigation, the shooting has intensified scrutiny of federal immigration tactics and the use of lethal force during public demonstrations.
