Rise to prominence: how Rogers reached the top

Date:

Morgan Rogers has enjoyed a rapid rise since joining Manchester City in 2019. After gaining experience in League One with Lincoln City during the 2020–21 season, he has progressed quickly, earning his senior England debut in November 2024. Now 23, Rogers is pushing to feature in Thomas Tuchel’s plans for this summer’s World Cup, having established himself as one of the most promising attacking midfielders in the country.

His development has continued at club level following his move from Middlesbrough to Aston Villa in February 2024, a deal that could reach £15 million. Rogers has impressed in both the Premier League and the Champions League, leading to growing interest from elite clubs. Although he is contracted at Villa until 2031, those terms are widely seen as a means of safeguarding the club’s valuation rather than ruling out a future sale.

Former Villa striker Stan Collymore believes a big-money transfer could be sanctioned, largely due to financial pressures linked to Profit and Sustainability Rules. While Rogers is unlikely to displace Jude Bellingham as England’s first-choice number 10, he is expected to play a significant role in the World Cup squad. Collymore also suggested that Villa may be forced to consider offers in the region of £70–80 million, potentially including players as part of the deal, to balance their squad and finances.

As for his next destination, Rogers is thought to be motivated by the chance to win trophies. Should Villa secure Champions League qualification or lift the FA Cup, he may be tempted to stay. Otherwise, clubs such as Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and possibly Arsenal are viewed as realistic suitors. With 25 goals in 99 appearances for Villa and 12 England caps to his name, Rogers’ trajectory suggests his future will remain a major talking point.
